Pembe / 2018 / 70 “
PEMBE (Swahili for “horn”) analogizes the present-day multi-billion dollar rhino-horn trade to the centuries-old hunt of the unicorn. The film imaginatively interrogates the life and legacy of Sudan, who was the sole male of the world’s three remaining Northern White Rhinos when he died of age-related complications last March. From his electrified enclosure in Kenya’s Ol Pejeta Conservancy, where he lived under the 24-hour protection of armed rangers, to his interment at the chilling rhino graveyard just down the dirt road, PEMBE explores how myths across time and space begot a poaching crisis.
Location: Kenya, Vietnam, Ireland and Portugal.
